Current students can book holiday and ad hoc lessons here.
I started online tutoring in the summer of 2020; my first online student improved from a B to A* in the October 2020 exam. I use zoom for video calling and bitpaper as an interactive whiteboard. Bitpaper is like an online notebook with 100 pages, once full we start a new one. The bitpaper can easily be converted to PDF and printed. As economics is diagram based and quite visual I use the whiteboard a lot.
Lessons are tailored towards the individual student and are interactive. I encourage students to ask questions and will regularly question them to ensure they understand. I use the whiteboard for diagrams as well as to write bullet points as we go through topics/questions to give students a focus. Students can also draw or write on the whiteboard (or paper if they prefer) so I can check their work.
Performing well in an exam is not just about understanding the theory but also being able to apply this knowledge through effective analysing and evaluating. When doing exam style questions I focus on how to answer the questions to gain maximum marks and will ensure that the student understands how the mark scheme is applied to their answers.
Examples of what a lesson might include
- Going over topics students did not understand earlier in the course, this may be going back to the start and doing a ‘crash course’
- Help with topics currently being studied at school
- Calculations and diagrams practice
- Working through past papers
- Working on essay plans – the student may then write the essay for homework
- Writing an essay together – first we discuss a plan then the student will share their screen whilst they type the essay with me promoting them every step.
- Detailed feedback and discussion on essays which have been written before the lesson.
- Going through tasks set for homework
Homework
This will be set if requested but is optional as some students get enough work from school. Homework tasks will could be consolidation of topics looked at in the lesson; planning or writing an essay; completing part of a past paper; some multi choice questions or reading ahead on a topic.
